Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a topic of day to day discussions in modern society.  This talk will present some aspects of "what is AI?'  then discuss the importance of modelling complex problems in an understandable way and methodologies to solve them efficiently. Constraint satisfaction paradigm provides a powerful tool to model complex real world problems and solve them efficiently using general-purpose constraint solving techniques. In this talk , we will discuss how a range of problems from diverse fields can be represented as constraint satisfaction problems. Given these problems are in general computationally intractable, we argue that local search based solving methods are more suitable than backtracking based methods. We will then present some of our recent results on solving the diverse range of optimisation problems.
